What is a travel eSIM?

An eSIM is a SIM card built into your phone rather than posted to you. You buy a data plan for wherever you are going, scan a QR code, and the plan sits alongside the SIM you already have — so you keep your own number for calls and texts while your data runs over a local network at local prices.

That is the whole trick. No queueing at an airport kiosk, no swapping a tiny piece of plastic over a hotel sink, and no roaming bill waiting for you when you land back home. You pay once, up front, and nothing renews afterwards.

Most phones released since 2018 support it — iPhone XR and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer — as long as the handset is not network locked.

  • Set up before you fly. Install it at home on your own Wi-Fi; it activates when you land.
  • Keep your UK number. The eSIM runs beside your existing SIM, not instead of it.
  • Fixed price, no surprises. One payment, no overage charges, nothing to cancel.
  • 1 to 30 days. Match the plan to the trip rather than a monthly cycle.
  • Data only. Maps, messaging and calls over WhatsApp or FaceTime.

Before you buy

Will it work on my handset?

Almost certainly, if the phone is from 2018 onwards and is not locked to a network. That covers iPhone XR and later, Pixel 3 and later, and the Galaxy S20 range upwards. To check in ten seconds, dial *#06#: if an EID appears alongside the IMEI, the hardware is ready. Handsets bought on contract are sometimes locked, in which case your current provider can release it free of charge.

Do I keep my own number?

Yes. The digital profile installs as a second line, so your usual SIM stays exactly where it is. Calls and texts to your normal number still arrive; only mobile data moves across to the local network. Most people leave roaming switched off on their main line for the trip and switch it back on when they get home.

How soon does it start working?

Delivery is immediate — the QR code arrives by email within a minute or two of payment. Installing it needs Wi-Fi, so the sensible order is to set it up at home before you fly. The plan itself does not begin counting down until the profile first connects to a network at your destination, so installing early costs you nothing.

What happens when the data runs out?

Nothing unexpected: the connection simply stops. There is no automatic renewal, no out-of-bundle rate and no bill arriving three weeks later. If you need more, you buy another plan and install it the same way. That is the whole reason these are sold as one-off purchases rather than contracts.

Can I reuse it on the next trip?

The profile stays on the handset and can be topped up again for the same region, which saves reinstalling. Going somewhere else usually means a plan for that region instead — pricing follows the local operator agreements, so a regional bundle is nearly always cheaper than one worldwide plan stretched across everywhere.

Is there anyone to ask if it goes wrong?

Yes, and it is worth saying plainly: support is staffed around the clock by people, not a chatbot queue. Email [email protected] and you will get a reply from someone who can actually help.
